Directed by the highly influential Czech filmmaker Věra Chytilová, this satirical, hyper-stylized comedy-drama takes a meta-cinematic approach to human nature, vanity, and modern relationships. The narrative follows an eccentric, avant-garde film director named Rostislav (played by Bolek Polívka) who is shooting a highly artistic, philosophical movie about a nudist beach. As the production drags on, the lines between the fictional film crew, the professional actors, and the real-life nudists lounging on the beach begin to completely blur. The project descends into an absurd, chaotic micro-society where social structures disintegrate, exposing raw human instincts, fragile egos, and uninhibited sexual desires.
