Set in the sleepy Irish seaside town of Bray, teenagers Jimmy (Niall Byrne) and Rose (Lorraine Pilkington) spend their summer observing tourists and inventing elaborate, scandalous stories about their lives. Their game takes a dark and obsessive turn when a mysterious, sophisticated American woman named Renee (Beverly D'Angelo) arrives in town. Jimmy becomes instantly infatuated, stalking and pursuing her into a sexual fascination that Renee, inexplicably, does not fully discourage. The "story" shifts from teenage boredom to a disturbing psychological drama as a long-hidden family secret comes to light: Renee is actually Jimmy’s mother, who abandoned him and his musician father years ago. The film explores a thinly veiled incestuous tension as Jimmy unknowingly attempts to seduce his own mother, while she struggles with the guilt of her past and the strange attraction of her son.
