In the war-torn city of Skopje during the 1941 German and Bulgarian occupation, eight-year-old Zoran witnesses the brutal collapse of his community while his father is away fighting for the Yugoslav Partisans. The story focuses on the moral and emotional turmoil of Zoran’s mother, Lica, who is forced to become a housekeeper for a high-ranking German officer named Hans. To survive and provide food for her family, Lica enters into a complex and controversial extramarital affair with the enemy officer. This relationship creates a deep rift within the family and the local resistance, as Zoran struggles to process his mother’s perceived betrayal amidst the deportations and executions occurring around them.
