Sous-Sol is a 1996 Canadian drama directed by Pierre Gang set in 1967 Montreal, in which 11-year-old René accidentally witnesses his parents having sex one night — and finds his father dead the next morning, leaving him convinced that sex and death are forever linked. His widowed mother Reine, beautiful and seductive, begins a relationship with Roch, a man in his thirties — and René, deeply jealous and possessive of his mother, cannot bear to share her with anyone. His emotional turmoil is complicated further when the attractive Françoise moves into the apartment upstairs, triggering René's own sexual awakening and pulling him in two directions at once — his Oedipal obsession with his mother on one side, and his first real desire for another woman on the other.
