Perla is a 2025 Austrian-Slovak drama written and directed by Alexandra Makarová, set in 1981 Vienna, in which Perla — a talented Slovak painter who fled communist Czechoslovakia — is finally building the life she always wanted with her new partner Josef and her teenage daughter Julia. Everything unravels when Andrej, Julia's biological father and Perla's former lover, calls from Czechoslovakia claiming to be seriously ill and begging her to come back. Torn between her stable new life with Josef and the unresolved guilt and feelings tied to Andrej — the man she left behind in prison — Perla crosses the Iron Curtain in a dangerous journey that pulls all three adults into a tortured love triangle, forcing her to choose between her past and her future.
