After being abandoned as a newborn during a storm, Jon grows up with an adoptive family in Greece. As a young adult, an altercation leads to the death of Lucian—Jon's biological father, though neither man realizes their relation. Sentenced to prison, Jon is cared for by Iro, a prison warden. The two fall in love, marry after his release, and have a child together. However, Iro eventually discovers that Jon is the young man who killed her former partner/husband Lucian, and that Jon is her biological son. The devastating revelation leads to Iro's suicide, while Jon (who loses his sight but gains an extraordinary singing gift) relocates to Berlin with their daughter, unaware of his origin or the full truth of the tragedy.
