Mehsampur is a 2018 Indian avant-garde mockumentary directed by Kabir Singh Chowdhry, in which cash-strapped filmmaker Devrath travels to rural Punjab to research the unsolved 1988 assassination of Amar Singh Chamkila — the legendary and controversial Punjabi folk singer who was shot dead alongside his wife and stage partner Amarjot Kaur just before a concert. Chamkila's music was notorious for its unflinching portrayal of Punjabi rural life — extra-marital affairs, toxic masculinity, alcohol abuse, obsession with sisters-in-law — topics considered deeply scandalous by conservative religious groups who may have contributed to his murder. Blurring the line between documentary and fiction, Devrath meets the singer's real surviving associates and his own love interest Manpreet, as the film spirals into a surreal, Lynch-influenced meditation on art, death and the ghost of a man too honest for his own time.
