Jacques (Jean-Pierre Bacri), an aging country doctor, lives in a quiet home near Paris with his devoted wife, Carole (Nathalie Baye). Preparing for retirement, Jacques hires a younger physician, François (Melvil Poupaud), to take over his medical practice. François and his young wife, Édith (Isabelle Carré), move into the neighboring house on the property, and the two couples quickly form a close friendship. However, as Jacques spends time passing on his work, he grows intensely obsessed with Édith. A secret, passionate extramarital affair begins between Jacques and Édith behind their spouses' backs, leading to emotional havoc, betrayal, and violence when Carole eventually catches them together.
