Following a whirlwind romance, Violette (Béatrice Dalle), a beautiful and spirited young woman, marries Gustave Dupin (Philippe Volter), a taciturn landowner who fell in love with her after secretly reading her personal diary. She moves with him to his isolated ancestral estate surrounded by dense, somber woods, which he shares with his austere mother.
