Set in early 20th-century Sicily, the story follows Modesta, a fiercely intelligent, pragmatic woman born into extreme poverty. After surviving a tragic fire that kills her family, she is sent to a convent. There, she gains an education and develops an intense bond with the Mother Superior, Leonora. Following Leonora's death, Modesta moves to the estate of the noble Brandiforti family. Rejecting the conservative constraints of society, Modesta navigates a web of power, political changes, and sexual freedom. She enters romantic and sexual relationships with both women and men—including Leonora's daughter Beatrice, the estate manager Carmine, and the disabled Brandiforti heir Ippolito in a marriage of convenience—eventually taking control of her own wealth, freedom, and destiny.
