In Haifa, Israel, Adam (Ciaran Hinds) is a wealthy, emotionally detached garage owner whose marriage to Asya (Juliet Aubrey) has grown cold following a family tragedy. When Gabriel (Stuart Townsend), a charming young Israeli emigré, arrives from France to claim an inheritance, Adam hires him at his garage and deliberately introduces him to Asya. Asya and Gabriel begin a passionate affair with Adam's tacit approval, but the delicate dynamic unravels when Gabriel suddenly disappears during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
