Directed by Amos Gitai, this powerful Israeli drama takes place within Mea Shearim, an ultra-Orthodox Hasidic neighborhood in Jerusalem. The film tracks the lives of two sisters, Rivka and Malka, as they struggle under the rigid constraints of their deeply patriarchal community. Rivka is happily married to Meir, but because they have been childless for ten years, the community's rabbi pressures Meir to divorce her to marry a younger woman. Meanwhile, Malka is forced into an arranged, loveless marriage with a zealous follower of the rabbi, prompting her to rebel against the absolute coldness and isolation of her new household by engaging in a secret extramarital tryst with her former lover who left the community.
