Divided into three distinct narrative segments, the film follows Julie (Chantal Akerman), a young woman living in voluntary isolation inside a sparse room, eating sugar and obsessively writing and rewriting a long letter ("Je / You"). Eventually leaving her room, she hitches a ride with an unnamed truck driver (Niels Arestrup), who rambles about his personal life, marriage, and sexual desires while she silently listens and assists him ("Il / He"). Her journey ends at the apartment of her former girlfriend (Claire Wauthion), who initially tries to turn her away but eventually feeds her and engages in an extended, intimate sexual encounter ("Elle / She").
