Gestur (Steinþór Rafn Matthíasson), a 7-year-old boy, is sent away for the summer to a remote Icelandic island farm managed by an elderly couple. Also staying on the island is Helga (Alda Sigurðardóttir), an attractive young pregnant woman in her early twenties. Gestur develops an intense, idealized obsessive crush on Helga, perceiving her as a sacred figure. However, his romantic fantasy collapses into jealousy and disillusionment when Helga's lover, a local fisherman, arrives at the island, forcing Gestur to confront the reality of adult relationships and female sexuality.
