Directed by Florian Flicker, this slow-burn Austrian drama is a modern, loose adaptation of Karl Schönherr’s classic play Der Weibsteufel (The She-Devil). The narrative is set in the desolate, marshy wetlands along the Austrian-Slovakian border shortly before the expansion of the Schengen area. The story follows Hans (Andreas Lust) and his wife Jana (Ursula Strauss), a couple who run a small, isolated tavern and supplement their meager income by illegally smuggling goods and refugees across the river border. Their insular domestic reality is disrupted when a young, ambitious border guard named Sebastian (Stefan Pohl) is tasked with catching Hans in the act. Seeking to protect his smuggling operation, Hans manipulates Jana into seducing the lonely young guard to gain inside information—a calculation that quickly spirals into an intense, unpredictable web of genuine desire, deep jealousy, and psychological manipulation.
