Glück im Hinterhaus is a 1980 East German drama film following Karl Erp, a forty-year-old library director and father of two who experiences a severe midlife crisis within his stale, long-term marriage. His routine is completely disrupted when he engages in a passionate extramarital affair with Fräulein Broder, a vibrant library intern who is twenty years his junior. Driven by his newfound infatuation, Karl abruptly abandons his wife, Elisabeth, and leaves his stable family home to move into his young lover’s cramped, loud tenement apartment in the rear of a building. Despite undercurrents of pressure to commit to a new marriage, the exciting illusion of their unconventional romance quickly erodes under the heavy strain of daily financial hardships, cramped living conditions, and domestic routine. Ultimately unable to sustain the sacrifices required for this relationship, Karl deserts his young mistress and crawls back to his family, only to realize that a profoundly altered Elisabeth no longer represents the submissive comfort he left behind.
