Maggie Swann (Michelle Monaghan), a decorated U.S. Army medic and single mother, returns home from an extended deployment in Afghanistan to Fort Bliss. Upon her return, she faces a painful readjustment as her 5-year-old son, Paul (Oakes Fegley), barely recognizes her and has bonded deeply with his father, Richard (Ron Livingston), and Richard's new partner, Alma (Emmanuelle Chriqui). While struggling to rebuild her relationship with her son, Maggie enters into a romantic relationship with a Mexican mechanic, Luis (Manolo Cardona), while grappling with the trauma of war and the constant threat of redeployment.
