Maria (Vibeke Løkkeberg), an engineer's wife trapped in a suffocating, bourgeois marriage that treats her like an ornament, learns she is pregnant and falls into existential crisis. When her husband leaves town for an extended period, Maria seeks an escape from her restrictive domestic life and initiates a passionate affair with Mikkel (Claus Nissen), a Danish temporary worker at a local swimming pool. As her desperation and desire for freedom deepen, Maria grows increasingly reckless, allowing herself to be drawn into the criminal activities planned by Mikkel and his associate.
