Elsker dig for evigt, internationally released as Open Hearts, is a 2002 Danish drama film that follows Cecilie and Joachim, a deeply in love young couple whose future plans are instantly shattered when Joachim is struck by a car and left completely paralyzed from the neck down. The devastating accident is caused by Marie, a mother of three who is distracted while driving with her rebellious teenage daughter, Stine. Unable to cope with his sudden physical disability, a bitter Joachim aggressively rejects Cecilie, driving her straight into the comforting arms of Niels, a sympathetic doctor who happens to be Marie's husband. Seeking solace from their respective family traumas, Cecilie and Niels engage in a passionate, highly consuming extramarital affair that completely fractures Niels's stable, long-term marriage. As Niels recklessly abandons his wife and children to move into a new apartment with his young lover, the toxic fallout of the affair forces everyone involved to confront the devastating collapse of their moral boundaries and family structures.
