In a tight-knit, deeply religious village in Southern Italy, Maria lives with her husband Gerardo and their two young children, Rocco and Carmela, on a secluded farm owned by her domineering father-in-law, Giuseppe. Struggling with deep financial strain, Gerardo makes the difficult choice to temporarily emigrate to Austria to earn a better living, leaving his vulnerable family behind. In his absence, the farm turns into a horrific living nightmare as Giuseppe imposes absolute control, trapping Maria and eventually her adolescent daughter, Carmela, in a brutal cycle of systemic domestic abuse and forced incestuous slavery. Trapped by a collective wall of silence from a community that chooses to look the other way, the film tracks the women's agonizing survival and desperate search for a way to break free from the monster ruling their household.
