Newlyweds Joseph (Craig Sheffer) and Maria (Sheryl Lee) struggle with severe intimacy issues six months into their marriage, culminating in Maria admitting she has never experienced an orgasm with Joseph. Unhappy with traditional psychoanalysis from their marriage counselor Alfred (Spalding Gray), Maria secretly seeks out Baltazar (Terence Stamp), an unconventional alternative sex therapist who engages in hands-on sexual techniques and tantric practices with his clients. When Joseph accidentally discovers Maria's sessions with Baltazar, he initially confronts the therapist in a rage. However, Joseph soon becomes Baltazar's pupil to learn Tantric healing and save his marriage. As the non-traditional sex therapy unfolds, Maria suffers a psychological breakdown that unearths repressed childhood memories of sexual abuse by her father, forcing both partners to confront trauma, emotional vulnerability, and the true meaning of intimacy.
