Set during the Portuguese Colonial War in the 1970s, the story follows Laura (Catarina Furtado), whose husband Jorge (Marco Delgado), a Portuguese military officer, is reported dead following a mine explosion in Guinea-Bissau. Refusing to accept his official death notice, Laura persistently investigates on her own to find out what happened. Meanwhile, Eduardo (Diogo Morgado)—a lieutenant and long-time friend of the couple who has harbored a secret passion for Laura—attempts to comfort her and persuade her to move on, drawing them into a romance shadowed by the possibility that Jorge is still alive as a prisoner of war.
